WSI Course Guide and Career Guide : 2011
12 TAFE NSW -- Western Sydney Institute -- Course and Career Guide 2011 TAFE NSW provides a means of assessing and recognising your previous learning and experience to help you avoid repeating what you already know. In this way you can complete your studies faster. For more information, please ask for advice at enrolment time, visit the Skills Recognition website at www.skillsrecognition.nsw.gov.au or call 131 870. There is no limit to the amount of recognition that may be granted in a TAFE NSW qualification. Recognition is based on the following principles: • all students in TAFE NSW are entitled to apply for the appropriate recognition service(s) for the course in which they are enrolled • students should not have to repeat learning where they can demonstrate that they have the required skills and knowledge • the purpose of recognition is to encourage participation in education and training. Recognition for a unit of competency means that you will be credited with advanced standing and an exemption from studying that unit as part of the qualification. You can apply for recognition towards your TAFE NSW qualification if: • you have completed previous study at TAFE NSW • you have completed other study in Australia • you have skills and qualifcations gained overseas • you have relevant work and life experience. You can get credit for a TAFE NSW unit you have already completed in another TAFE NSW qualification, provided that the unit has the same or similar content and outcomes. Recognition for other study in Australia TAFE NSW recognises equivalent Australian Qualification Framework courses from other education and training providers. You can apply for recognition of learning in courses previously completed in TAFE NSW, or from other training providers, such as Universities, schools, Adult and Community Education colleges, private colleges and other Registered Training Organisations. Recognition for skills and qualifications gained overseas If you have overseas qualifications in a field of study the same as or related to your TAFE NSW qualification, TAFE NSW will carefully consider whether they can be used to satisfy the entry requirements for a TAFE NSW course or to obtain advanced standing in that course. WSI provides special recognition programs and services for overseas experienced people in some qualifications, such as Electrical Trades and Building Trades. Your documents and qualifications must be in English or translated into English. If you need to translate documents, you can call the Community Relations Commission (CRC) on 1300 651 500. A free translation service of certain documents for migrants who have been Australian permanent residents for less than two years is provided by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Recognition Mature Age? As a mature age worker your value in the Australian job market is increasing all the time. Studying at TAFE NSW can increase your opportunities and career options. The experience, knowledge and skills you have gained over the years are an asset. TAFE NSW -- Western Sydney Institute can help you to make the most of what you already have, take advantage of the opportunities that are out there right now, and take the next step towards a successful future.
