Year In Review : 2012
19 MAKING HIGHER EDUCATION MORE ACCESSIBLE In 2012, WSI continued its foray into the realm of higher education by o ering its first on-campus TAFE NSW Bachelor qualification. The degree was in addition to degree programs o ered through WSI's partner universities and other graduate qualifications. The four-year Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Care (Birth-5) delivered at Nirimba campus added to WSI's suite of early childhood qualifications and helped bridge the traditional gap between vocational and higher education. Fully subscribed in both 2012 semesters, this degree caters for a skills shortage area. The applied- learning focus and high level of support means graduates will be well prepared for work in long day care services, preschools, integrated child and family services and early intervention services. During 2012 work was done to develop a fourth year internship option for this degree. Further higher education and degree program opportunities for western Sydney students were pursued in 2012, with WSI participating in a consortium for the development of the Associate Degree in Applied Engineering (Renewable Energy Technologies). This qualification was approved by the Academic Board in November 2012 for submission to Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA) for delivery at WSI in 2014. Blacktown College delivered the Graduate Certificate in Management (Professional Practice), the Graduate Diploma in Management and the Masters in Management. These programs were delivered on behalf of the Australian Graduate Management Consortium (AGMC), which is a unique joint initiative between Charles Sturt University (CSU) and TAFE NSW. This long standing, successful partnership continues to expand higher education options for the people of western Sydney. The Bachelor of Applied Management degree program was o ered in conjunction with the University of Ballarat and was delivered to full-time and part-time students from Semester 2, 2012. Additional higher education opportunities were developed in 2012 through the WSI and University of Ballarat partnership. Guaranteed entry was established between a range of diplomas and advanced diplomas into the third year of the Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) and the Bachelor of Applied Management (Design). The Bachelor of Applied Management programs also guarantee entry into Masters' programs which include graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and Masters' qualifications. Arrangements were also developed for WSI to deliver the Bachelor of Design (Graphic Design) on behalf of the University of Ballarat with the first enrolments planned for mid 2013.
