25 RESPONDING TO INDUSTRY SKILLS DEVELOPMENT NEEDS Skilling the Australian workforce continues to be a national focus. WSI responded to industry skills development needs through forming partnerships and developing skills strategies. The Australian Racing and Equine Academy (AREA) continued to work towards safety, sustainability and professionalism for the NSW Thoroughbred Racing industry. This partnership between WSI and Racing NSW continued to develop and deliver innovative training and other services to meet specific industry needs. AREA was awarded the Gold Award in the 'Partnerships' category at the TAFE NSW Innovation and Excellence Showcase in November 2012. WSI conducted pioneering work in sustainable tourism and events management in 2012. In a worldwide first for an educational institute, WSI introduced training in Sustainable Events Management Systems (SEMS), responding to industry demand for employees with skills in the sustainability system. The online system is consistent with sustainable events management standards and practice and despite being considered industry best practice, training was not previously available for students. The training gives students skills and knowledge enabling them to identify cost savings, report on sustainability performance and comply with regulations. WSI also led the way in sustainable tourism through its involvement in World Responsible Tourism Day in November 2012. AREA sta with their TAFE NSW Innovation and Excellence Showcase award.
